Step 1 Read the labels!
One of the most important natural steps to get beautiful skin is to super aware of what you are putting on your skin. Avoid harsh chemicals & fragrances in your skin care regiment because they can irritate or damage your skin. If you don’t recognize the ingredients, look them up and make sure they are safe. Two really good websites I’ve found to check ingredients in skincare products for safety & effectiveness are:
- EWG Skin Deep Database (This site focuses on the safety of ingredients)
- Beautypedia (This site focuses more on the effectiveness of ingredients, but also safety)
Normal drugstore skin moisturizer has some weird and horrible stuff in it. Since your skin is your bodies largest organ so you need to be careful with what you put on it, because about 60% will be absorbed directly into your bloodstream. Do you want it absorbing ingredients like Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate (found in loads of common drugstore lotions and cosmetics) which has been found to be toxic to the human nervous system? I didn’t think so! Honestly, I can’t believe that huge brands can get away with selling products with ingredient like this. As consumers we need to be smart with what we purchase and do the proper research for what we put in/on our bodies.
To avoid the ingredients in drugstore lotion that my skin definitely didn’t need I keep it so simple and switched my moisturizer to organic coconut oil as my main body skin moisturizer several years ago. I’ve never looked back because it is one ingredient, natural and so moisturizing! It is so healthy I could literally eat it if I wanted to. When buying coconut oil, I normally get one of the massive tubs and always make sure its organic. I took a quick look on amazon and this is the cheapest organic coconut oil I found. (per fluid ounce). It may vary depending which country you are in so have a browse!
Drink All the Water!
Second of the natural steps to get beautiful skin is staying hydrated! It is one of the most basic, but also most important ways to keep your skin looking great and maintain your overall health. This is your bodies first defence to flush out the bad stuff naturally. When you are well hydrated your skin glands aren’t getting the ‘I’m dry’ message, so will produce less oil, which equals less chance of acne or oily skin. Hydrated skin = Win! Pro Tip: Infuse your water with yummy fruit to keep it exciting & healthy!
Eating the Right Foods Makes a Huge Difference.
I go into this in way more detail in other posts on the site, but in a nutshell: load up fibre, fruits, veggies… whole foods are your friend. Limit your intake of sugar and dairy, these will definitely work against your healthy skin goals.
Exercise is the holygrail in a healthy lifestyle & is crucial in the natural steps to get beautiful skin! I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for so many reasons. For starters, exercising increases circulation, which will help your body flush toxins and the bad stuff which can be a major player in causing acne and other skin issues. Exercise has also releases endorphins which reduces stress and stress causes acne. Everything you can do to reduce stress will help your skin!
